Doug Mug Swanson: Bass-Driven Heartbeat of the West Coast Revival

BY ANDY GREENE

October 20th 2025

In the sun-soaked streets of Venice Beach, where the ocean’s roar meets the grind of skateboards and the splash of graffiti, Doug “Mug” Swanson has come full circle. Born and raised amid this vibrant chaos, Swanson traded the Pacific waves for Nashville’s neon lights over a decade ago, honing his craft in the heart of Music City. But like a tide pulling back to shore, he’s returned home, bringing with him a powerhouse ensemble called The Thugs—and a sound that’s as gritty and alive as the boardwalk itself. With a resume stacked like a deck of aces, including stints alongside legends and a TV role that put him in living rooms nationwide, Swanson isn’t just playing music; he’s crafting experiences that pulse with life, drawing crowds that can’t help but move.

Swanson’s journey reads like a rock ‘n’ roll odyssey. Growing up in the wild ‘80s LA scene, he soaked up the raw energy of punk’s rebellion and the grunge wave that followed in the ’90s. By his early 20s, after picking up the bass guitar in Sedona, Arizona, he was gigging professionally, his fingers finding that deep, heavy-handed relentless groove that would become his signature. A pivotal moment came in the mid-2000s when he snagged 3 awards for his bass playing in Memphis, Tennessee—a win that catapulted him onto the professional map.

Relocating to Nashville in 2011, he dove headfirst into the scene, mastering country licks on both electric and upright bass to keep the gigs flowing. “I had a crash course,” he recalls with a chuckle. “Had to bring my A-game.”

It was in Nashville where Swanson’s versatility shone brightest. He landed a recurring role as Monty Handsome on the ABC-TV series “Nashville,” rubbing shoulders with fictional country stars while building real-world connections. This led to high-profile tours and sessions, including a revered stint with the Johnny Cash Family revue—featuring Cash’s brother Tommy, sister Joanne, nephew Mark, and the legendary drummer W.S. “Fluke” Holland, who pounded the skins for Elvis himself. “It was like looking over and seeing history,” Swanson says. His bass work earned him calls from icons like Keb’ Mo’, Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, and a slew of others, each collaboration adding layers to his already rich musical tapestry.

But Nashville’s landlocked hustle couldn’t compete with the call of the coast forever. “There’s no beach in Nashville,” Swanson laughs. “No ocean.” Returning to Venice Beach in 2020, he reformed The Thugs, turning holiday visits into electrifying reunions. Guest spots from heavy hitters like Louichi Mayorga of Suicidal Tendencies add extra fire, making each show feel like a one-of-a-kind jam.

What makes The Thugs’ music so compelling? It’s that undeniable pulse—the way Swanson’s bass lines thump with a heavy, rhythmic authority, anchoring the chaos like the steady crash of waves.  Playing venues like The Venice West and the Cinema Bar in Culver City have seen sold-out nights, with crowds packing in for the raw, crowd-engaging power that gets bodies moving and spirits lifted.

Swanson’s recent singles capture this essence in studio form. “Sinner” pulses with a confessional intensity, its grooves digging deep into themes of redemption and loss. His hit single “City by the Sea,” a love letter to Venice Beach, evokes the salty air and endless horizons with melodies that linger long after the track fades. “Leave It All Behind” offers an escape, its rhythms building to cathartic releases that mirror the freedom of ditching the daily grind for the open road. These tracks, alongside guest appearances like his heavy-handed bass lines on the "Key Frances Band’s live album Road Trip" - Live Friday Night, showcase a musician who breaks boundaries, blending technical mastery with pure, passionate delivery.

Blues Revue Magazine-2005 The Key Frances Band- Live Friday Night Road Trip. The well traveled front-man of the Key Frances Band has forged his guitar style out of crisply percussive rhythm playing and rock-tinged, almost psychedelic lead work. Even considering the live origin of ROAD TRIP-LIVE FRIDAY NIGHT (Red Room Records), the proceedings have a jam like quality. If the songs aren't always memorable, Frances  c and the band pay close attention to dynamics and test-drive a number of different forms---spacy ballads ("Best Intentions"), chugging blues-rockers ("Howlin' at the Moon").  Special Guest Bassist Doug Mug Swanson lend his heavy right hand on three tracks: ("Trains"), the heavy rockabilly boogie ("Detroit Iron") and  ("Come See About Me " .”

Hey Doug, You had no reason to be nervous. You did a great job at Tupelo Music Hall even though Albert Cummings threw you a few curve balls up there. My wife and I were mucho impressed. I’ve been playing guitar for more than 50 years and in my not so humble opinion you and Warren were squeaky tight. Probably the best rhythm section I have ever heard in a three-piece lineup. Again, great job.- Paul Sylvain Sept 14, 2019

Culver City News- Dec 2022

Actor and musician Doug Mug might be recognizable to many due to his recurring role in hit TV show Nashville. He’s a musician too though, and he’ll be performing at the Cinema Bar early in the New Year – one of his regular haunts.

He spoke to the CCN about what we can expect.

When did you start playing and performing?

I started playing acoustic guitar at age 10 at McCabes Guitar Shop – my Dad bought me an electric guitar at age 14. Then someone put a Fender bass in my hands when I was 19 living in Sedona Arizona, and it was all over with. I was playing professional gigs in my early 20’s. This lineup came about in 2014 when I was living in Nashville. I’d come home to L.A. for the holidays. We’d do a big Christmas show at the Cinema Bar once a year, and that’s how it launched.

Doug Mug and The Thugs are a Venice area blues rock band featuring Doug Mug Swanson from Nashville fame on bass guitar, with Bubba Blues (guitar/vocals), J.R. Lozano (vintage Ludwig drums), Chef Denny (blues harmonica master).

These days, Doug Mug Swanson lives in Nashville, few times a year he comes back to town and puts together his band...Doug Mug & the Thugs.

They really rocked the Cinema Bar in Culver City last night and the crowd was really getting into to it.
Four very awesome musicians make-up Doug Mug & the Thugs:
Two great guitarists from Fullerton CA Bubba Blues and Jason James
JR Lozano-drums (Los Lobos Family)
Doug Mug Swanson-bass who also played the character of Monty Handsome on the ABC TV series "Nashville"
Several musicians sat in with the band including Original Bass Player/Songwriter from "Suicidal Tendencies"  Louichi Mayorga played some sweet rhythm guitar.

Ok, so last night you had Soul/Blues Legend Curtis Salgado on vocals & harmonica, from

Portland Oregon Alan Hagar on lead guitar and a great rhythm section of Nashville Session Ace Doug Mug Swanson on bass and Rena Beavers (Little Milton, Coco Montoya) on drums.

Yo'Venice: Dec 2017

The Venice born and raised bass player moved away to Nashville ten years ago chasing life as a professional musician. Within weeks of landing in Tennessee Swanson found an agent he’d hoped could help him score gigs as a bassist. Instead, she got him on television.

Rather than jamming on stage, Swanson found himself on set shooting the pilot for ABC’s Nashville. He didn’t expect any more than a day’s work after booking a small co-star as a member of character Deacon Claybourne’s posse. Actor Charles Esten plays Claybourne. However, the pilot was picked up, and Swanson found himself quite often stepping into the role of Monty Handsome, even now the show has moved across to CMT. “Whenever Deacon’s posse is needed, I get a call,” said Swanson.

While TV stardom has made his Mom happy, “she Tivos it and tells all her friends,” Swanson said he never had any intention of acting. However, as a new musician in Nashville, he found the role helped open doors. Still, it took Swanson around five years to build his career to where it is now. These days he works consistently and is often on the road touring with big names. Swanson also writes and co-writes music. His song “Sinner” being one example. And, thanks to his TV role, “my friends all call me Monty,” he said.

Swanson picked up a guitar at ten learning to play at McCabe’s Guitar Shop, which is still open today at 3101 Pico Blvd., in Santa Monica. He played guitar for nine years before discovering bass. It was love. “It’s the rhythm. It’s the boogie that makes all the girls dance,” he said. “And if you look at the bass player, they’re usually the coolest guy or girl in the band.” According to Swanson; “guitarists have their thing going on. Drummers get all the love, we (bass players) carry all the melody. We carry the rhythm in the room.”
